Kabupaten Nunukan adalah salah satu Kabupaten di provinsi Kalimantan Timur, Indonesia. Ibu kota kabupaten ini terletak di kota Nunukan. Kabupaten ini memiliki luas wilayah 14.493 km² dan berpenduduk sebanyak 109.527 jiwa (2004). Motto Kabupaten Nunukan adalah "Penekindidebaya" yang artinya "Membangun Daerah" yang berasal dari bahasa suku Tidung. Nunukan juga adalah nama sebuah kecamatan di Kabupaten Nunukan, Provinsi Kalimantan Timur, Indonesia.

Pada tahun 2003 terjadi tragedi kemanusiaan besar-besaran di Nunukan ketika para pekerja gelap asal Indonesia yang bekerja di Malaysia dideportasi kembali ke Indonesia lewat Nunukan.

Pelabuhan Nunukan merupakan pelabuhan lintas dengan kota Tawau, Malaysia. Bagi penduduk kota Nunukan yang hendak pergi ke Tawau diperlkan dokumen PLB (Pas Lintas Batas). Setiap hari rata-rata sekitar 8 unit kapal cepat dengan kapasitas kurang lebih 100 orang mondar-mandir antar Nunukan dengan Tawau Malaysia.

Di Kota Tawau sendiri banyak sekali orang Indonesia (baik WNI/ atau warga Malaysia) yang berasal dari Indonesia terutama dari suku bangsa Bugis Bone

Sejarah terbentuknya kabupaten

Kabupaten Nunukan merupakan wilayah pemekaran dari Kabupaten Bulungan, yang terbentuk berdasarkan pertimbangan luas wilyah, peningkatan pembangunan, dan peningkatan pelayanan kepada masyarakat. Pemekaran Kabupaten bulungan ini di pelopori oleh RA Besing yang pada saat itu menjabat sebagai Bupati Bulungan.

Pada tahun 1999, pemerintah pusat memberlakukan otonomi daerah dengan didasari Undang-Undang Nomor 22 tahun 1999 tentang Pemerintahan Daerah. Nah, dgn dasar inilah dilakukan pemekaran pada Kabupaten Bulungan menjadi 2 kabupaten baru lainnya yaitu Kabupaten Nunukan dan kabupaten Malinau.

Pemekaran Kabupaten ini secara hukum diatur dalam UU Nomor 47 Tahun 1999 tentang Pembentukan Kabupaten Nunukan, Kabupaten Malinau, Kabupaten Kutai Timur, Kabupaten Kutai Barat, dan Kota Bontang pada tanggal 4 Oktober 1999. Dan dengan dasar UU Nomor 47 tahun 1999 tersebut Nunukan Resmi menjadi Kabupaten dengan dibantu 5 wilayah administratif yakni Kecamatan Lumbis, Sembakung, Nunukan, Sebatik dan Krayan.

Pemekaran kabupaten

Pada tanggal 17 Juli 2007, dalam Sidang Paripurna DPR RI telah disetujui pembentukan kabupaten baru yaitu Kabupaten Tana Tidung, yang merupakan pemekaran dari wilayah Nunukan dan Bulungan. Dari Nunukan, kecamatan Sembakung dipindahkan menjadi wilayah kabupaten baru tersebut, sedangkan dari Bulungan, dipindahkan tiga kecamatan, yaitu Sesayap, Sesayap Hilir dan Tanah Lia.

Seiring dengan pembentukan ini dilakukan pulah pelantikan pejabat Bupati Nunukan yaitu Drs. Bustaman Arham, tepatnya pada tanggal 12 Oktober 1999 di Jakarta. Setelah pelantikan Bupati Nunukan, dilakukan persiapan penataan perangkat daerah dan pembentukan Dewan perwakilan Rakyat Daerah (DPRD) juga disiapkan.

Tanggal 25 Desember 1999, dilantik 14 orang pejabat pada eselon II, III, IV untuk mengisi jabatan struktural. Tiga hari setelah pelantikan jabatan struktural tepatnya tanggal 28 Desember 1999 dilanjutkan dengan pelantikan 20 orang anggota Legislatif Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah Kabupaten Nunukan hasil Pemilihan Umum tahun 1999. Para Legislator tersebut berasal dari Partai Golkar, PDIP, PPP dan PAN.

Pemilihan Bupati

Meskipun masih dihadapkan berbagai hambatan infrastruktur dan suprastruktur, pemerintahan di Kabupaten Nunukan sudah mulai berjalan secara normal. Kesempatan ini dipergunakan oleh pemerintah daerah untuk melakukan pemilihan bupati definitif melalui sidang paripurnah DPRD. Tepatnya pada tanggal 11 April 2001.

Pada kesempatan tersebut muncul 3 pasangan calon, antara lain Pasangan Drs.H. Bustaman Arham – H. Ali Karim, Drs.H. Aseng Gusti Nuch – H. Arsyad Talib, SE serta H. Abdul Hafid Ahmad – Drs. Kasmir Foret, MM. Dari 3 pasangan yang maju tersebut, terpilihlah pasangan H. Abdul Hafid Ahmad – Drs. Kasmir Foret, MM sebagai bupati dan Wakil Bupati Nunukan Periode 2001 – 2006. Dan Pasangan ini di lantik pada tanggal 30 Mei 2001.

Asal Usul Tana Malai Tolung Lingu Dikatakan Juga Petak Malai Buluh Merindu Part II

“Nyaman dan Talawang Amai Meteh” telah menemukan Tana Malai buluh merindu sehingga mereka berdua memutuskan untuk membatalkan keinginan mereka untuk balampah atau bersemedi tetapi memutuskan untuk kembali ke kampung mereka kedua orang penduduk Suku Siang Murung ini melakukan perjalanan kembaali dengan melewati hutan belantara dan semak belukar dengan waktu yang berhari-hari. Sesampainya di kampung kedua orang itu menceritakan tentang Tana Malai Tolung Lingu yang telah mereka temukan kepada Tua-tua adat dan penduduk kampung mereka.
Tana Malai Tolung Lingu atau Petak Malai Buluh Merindu itu dijadikan Songkolasan-songkolimu penduduk Suku Siang Murung. Maka sebab itu kalau ada orang pendatang atau tamu yang mandi dan minum ari Sungai Laung, lalu merasa lingo-lingo atau lupa-lupa ingin pulang atau kembali ke daerah asalnya dan akhirnya menetap kimpoi dan menetap bersama penduduk asli di Hulu Sungai Laung yang sekarang menjadi Bumi Tana Malai Tolung Lingu Kabupaten Murung Raya.
Sampai pada saat inipun legenda ni masih di percaya oleh masyarakat di sepanjang sungai Barito Kabupaten Murung Raya atau Puruk Cahu. Demikian Legenda rakyat Tana Malai Tolung Lingu Kabupaten Murung Raya.***Kedua orang ini segera menceritakan perihal penemuan mereka tersebut kepada Tua-tua adat dan penduduk lainnya kemudian Tana Malai Tolung Lingu atau petak Malai Buluh Merindu bagi Suku Siang Kono dijadikan Songkolasan-Songkolimo atau pemikat atau penakluk hati. Konon ceritanya setiap orang asing atau tamu yang datang ke Hulu Barito, kalau mereka mandi atau minum air sungai barito mereka akan merasa lingo-lingo atau rasa ingin pulang kembali ke tempat asaalnya akan ditunda-tunda atau nanti-nanti saja dalam hatinya pada akhirnya tidak jadi pulang kembali ketempat asalnya tetapi akan kimpoi dan hidup menetap atau tinggal di Hulu Barito bersama dengan penduduk asli suku siang, punan, panyawung, ut Danum dan lain-lain. Sebab itu di Hulu Barito sekarang banayak sekali suku pendatang yang menetap disana.
Kemudian pada tahun 1721 Tana Malai Tolung Lingu telah di temukan oleh penduduk suku Siang Murung kampung Taluu Nyaling yang bernama “Nyaman” dan “Talawang Amai Meteh”. Tana Malai Tolung Lingu di temukan di gunung Bondang tepatnya di hulu sungai laung.
Kedu orang ini berjalan ke gunung Bondang, bermaksud untuk balampah atau bersemedi guna mencari alamat atau petunjuk yang baik agar memperoleh hidup sukses. Setelah melakukan perjalanan yang cukup dari kampungnya berhari-hari, kedua orang itu pun’ Nyaman dan Talawang Amai Meteh “akhirnya sampailah pada puncak gunung Bondang yang paling tinggi di antara gunung-gunung yang ada di daerah tersebut atau daerah murung Raya taua Puruk Cahu sekarang. Gunung Bondang yang paling tinggi itu disebut Lapak Pati.
Ketika Nyaman dan Talawang Amai Meteh telah berada di puncak Gunung Bondang di jumpailah Tolung lingu yang hidup di pncak Gunung Bondang tersebut. Kemudian mereka berdua mengambil Tolung Lingu dan mencari Tana Malai petak Malai dan akhirnyapun “Nyaman dan Talawang Amai Meteh” mendapatkannya
